The diagram says oxidation after opening provides heat. Apply over clothing, not on bare or broken skin; a further clothing layer is advised if it feels too hot. Remove promptly if itching or discomfort occurs. The seller cautions against use while sleeping, with other heating devices, for infants or children, during pregnancy or lactation, on broken skin or acute injury, and by people with mugwort sensitivity.
