Moxibustion for fatigue: what the research says
Systematic reviews on moxibustion for chronic fatigue syndrome and cancer-related fatigue, including a breast-cancer meta-analysis and a trial of flame-free infrared laser moxibustion, with evidence-quality caveats.
Short answer: “fatigue” and “low energy” are classic traditional reasons for moxibustion. Clinic handouts describe moxa points to “build qi” when tired [1]. Systematic reviews report possible benefit for chronic fatigue syndrome and cancer-related fatigue, but the trials are mostly small and of low quality [2][3].
Persistent fatigue has many medical causes, such as anaemia, thyroid disease or depression, which need assessment. Evidence summary only; Moxa Sourcing makes no treatment claims.
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
- A 2017 meta-analysis found that combined acupuncture and moxibustion, or moxibustion alone, “may have better effect” than other treatments, while noting relatively poor trial quality [2].
- A 2022 network meta-analysis reported significantly higher effects than other treatments, and its authors advocated wider use [4]. Readers should weigh this against the quality concerns raised in the other reviews.
- An earlier review of Chinese studies found that none used a randomized design, and recommended using the commonly chosen points in future rigorous trials [5].
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF)
| Source | Finding | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Meta-analysis, 2023 [3] | Moxibustion “may have a therapeutic effect” | Few studies; low methodological quality |
| Breast cancer meta-analysis, 2024 [6] | Improves CRF | Needs high-quality studies in various countries |
| Meta-analysis, 2014 [7] | Cannot conclude it is effective and safe | High risk of bias; low reporting quality |
| Meta-analysis, 2013 [8] | Appears efficacious as an auxiliary therapy | Few high-quality RCTs |
| RCT, infrared laser moxibustion, 2024 [9] | Safe; reduced fatigue vs wait-list | Advantage over sham still to be verified |
The evidence has shifted between reviews. The 2014 review was unable to conclude anything [7], while later reviews are more positive but still flag low quality [3][6].

FAQ: related questions
Does moxa help with tiredness?
Reviews of chronic fatigue syndrome and cancer-related fatigue report possible benefit, but most trials are small, Chinese-language and of low methodological quality, so the evidence is not conclusive.
