Moxibustion for urinary conditions: what the research says

Evidence on moxibustion for stress and urge incontinence, post-prostatectomy incontinence, overactive bladder, neurogenic bladder and urinary retention after surgery — mostly preliminary findings. No treatment claims.

Short answer: urinary problems are a long-standing use of moxibustion; an adverse-events review lists urinary incontinence among moxibustion’s common indications [1]. Systematic reviews report preliminary benefit for several urinary conditions, frequently as part of combined treatment [2][3][4].

New urinary symptoms, blood in urine or inability to pass urine need medical assessment. Evidence summary only; Moxa Sourcing makes no treatment claims.

What reviews and trials report

Condition Source Reported finding Caveat
Urinary retention after anorectal surgery Meta-analysis, 2023 [4] Moxibustion appears superior to usual care Further studies needed
Stress urinary incontinence in women Network meta-analysis, 2024 [3] Moxibustion plus pelvic floor training plus electrical stimulation ranked most effective Limited studies
Post-prostatectomy incontinence Network meta-analysis, 2026 [5] Needle-warming moxibustion among top-ranked options Needs detailed RCTs
Incontinence after stroke Meta-analysis, 2021 [2] Preliminary evidence Large rigorous RCTs needed
Overactive bladder Pilot RCT, 2018 [6] “Might be considered as an alternative”; full trial feasible Pilot only
Neurogenic bladder after spinal cord injury RCT, 2023 [7] Electroacupuncture and moxibustion both improved bladder function, with different strengths Single trial

Methods used

Trials often use moxibustion over the lower abdomen and sacral area. Some use ginger-salt indirect moxibustion at the navel; a pilot trial protocol for urge incontinence after stroke describes this method [8]. See Ginger, garlic and salt moxibustion.

Safety

The general burn risk applies. It is higher in people with reduced sensation, such as after stroke or spinal cord injury [1].

FAQ: related questions

Does moxibustion help bladder problems?

Reviews report preliminary evidence for several urinary problems, such as urinary retention after anorectal surgery and incontinence after stroke, often when moxibustion is combined with pelvic floor training or other therapy. Larger, rigorous trials are needed.
