"Smokeless" moxa boxes, copper boxes and purifier bags
Many products sold as 'smokeless moxa' are copper or metal moxa boxes with filter bags that burn ordinary moxa. How they differ from smokeless (carbonized) moxa, what research says about filtering moxa smoke, and safety points.
Short answer: on Amazon and other marketplaces, many products called “smokeless moxa” are copper or metal moxa boxes with a cloth bag or filter, and they burn ordinary moxa cones or rolls [1]. Any smoke reduction comes from the device, not from processed moxa. That makes them a different category from carbonized smokeless moxa [2].
Two meanings of “smokeless”
| Smokeless moxa (material) | “Smokeless” moxa box (device) | |
|---|---|---|
| What burns | Carbonized mugwort stick or cone | Ordinary moxa cones or rolls |
| How smoke is reduced | Volatiles removed by carbonization before use [2] | Container, bag or filter traps or diffuses smoke |
| Tested under ISO 21366? | Can be, if the product claims smokeless [3] | ISO 21366 covers devices that reduce smoke “by processing or changing the main combustion material”; a filter box may not fit that definition [4] |
| Typical listing | “Carbonized moxa stick” | “Smokeless copper moxa box with purifier bag” [1] |
Copper moxa box (الموكسا النحاسية)
Arabic searchers look for الموكسا النحاسية, “copper moxa” [1]. Saudi and UAE Amazon listings describe portable copper boxes sold with moxa cones and a cloth “therapy bag” or “purifier bag”, marketed as “smokeless” sets [1]. Ordinary moxa burns inside the box.
Does filtering work?
- No independent test of consumer moxa purifier bags was found.
- In a hospital study, a room air cleaner was inefficient, especially for gases, while local exhaust ventilation worked better [5].
- Laboratory research shows that removing moxa’s ultrafine oily aerosols takes specialised membranes [6].
- Carbon monoxide is a gas and is not trapped by particle filters [7][8].
Safety
- The box gets hot. Keep a cloth layer between the box and skin, and check the skin often [9][10].
- Never leave a burning box unattended or use it while asleep [10][11].
- Keep bedding and clothing away from the vents [10].

FAQ: related questions
What is a smokeless copper moxa box?
A copper or metal container in which ordinary moxa cones or rolls are burned, sold with a cloth bag or filter that listings say reduces smoke. The smoke reduction comes from the device, not from processed moxa.
What is الموكسا النحاسية?
It is the Arabic name for the copper moxa box — a portable metal container for burning moxa, sold with a cloth bag.
Do moxa purifier bags remove smoke?
We found no independent test of consumer moxa purifier bags. Research shows ordinary air cleaners are inefficient for moxa gases, while specialised laboratory membranes can filter oily aerosols.
