A Taiyi or thunder-fire moxa trade name is not a standardized formula or regulatory conclusion. Use this per-SKU buyer due-diligence guide.
The Documented Divergence: One Name, Many Formulas
The table below lists what different sellers currently publish for products carrying the “Taiyi” name. Read the ingredient columns side by side — the divergence is the point.
| Seller / listing | Published composition | Format | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| European acupuncture retailer (Green Nature brand) | Artemisiae argyi folium plus 8 other botanicals (Ramulus Cinnamomi, Herba Pogostemonis, Rhizoma Atractylodis, Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, Rhizoma Cyperi, Ligni Dalbergiae Odoriferae, Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii) | 15 mm × 21.4 cm, box of 10 | [1] |
| US acupuncture supply retailer (Tai-I rolls) | 10 ingredients with percentages: Folium Artemisiae Argyi 90%, plus nine botanicals at 0.5–2% each | Box of 10 rolls | [2] |
| Korean brand (Dongbang, via 3B Scientific) | Moxa mixed with 4 botanicals (Rhizoma Et Radix Notopterygii, Radix Aucklandiae, Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae) | 21.4 × 1.5 cm, 10 pcs | [3] |
| Chinese manufacturer (“Tai Yi Moxa Roll”) | Lists only “moxa leaf, mugwort, wormwood”; declares HS code 3004.90.5990 | 17 × 210 mm, 10 pcs/box | [4] |
The listed sellers give different answers to “what is Taiyi moxa.” The following points are limited to what their listings declare:
- Supplier-declared classifications differ. The Chinese manufacturer in row 4 declares HS 3004.90.5990 [4], while a different supplier declares 1211.90.3993 for a smokeless moxa product [5]. These declarations do not prove how either product should be classified; give your broker the actual SKU’s composition, processing, form, and intended use.
- Traditional function descriptions in listings are supplier marketing. Several listings carry traditional-use descriptions. Those texts are not verified claims, they vary by seller, and importing them into your US-facing copy can change your regulatory exposure — see the claims rule below.
Patterns in This Limited Listing Set
The following are observations from the cited listings, not category rules:
- Ingredient disclosures differ. Several cited Taiyi listings describe mugwort/moxa plus other botanicals; source [2] lists 90% Folium Artemisiae Argyi. This does not establish the formula for any other SKU.
- Dimensions differ. The cited listings show 15–17 mm diameter and approximately 210–214 mm length for particular products [1][3][4]. Confirm the sample, not a trade-name convention, for packaging or holder compatibility.
- Retail positioning is not product evidence. A retailer’s presentation can help identify a product listing, but it does not prove formulation, practitioner use, performance, or market acceptance for another SKU.
The Per-SKU Due-Diligence Checklist
Before any blended format enters your US line, per SKU — not per trade name:
- Complete ingredient list with Latin botanical names and proportions, from your actual supplier (not from another seller’s listing of a same-named product).
- Botanical identity confirmation — which species each name refers to; “mugwort” marketing language can map to different Artemisia species.
- Controlled-test decision before ignition. Do not use a routine sourcing burn comparison for a blended SKU. First obtain the complete formula, SDS or equivalent hazard information where applicable, and a qualified person’s documented decision on whether any controlled, non-clinical evaluation is appropriate. No patient, skin, customer-wear, clinical exposure, deliberate smoke inhalation, or untrained observer exposure is permitted.
- Classification review — share the full composition with your customs broker; blended formulas can change classification direction, as the divergent supplier declarations show [4][5].
- Label and claims review — your US-facing copy goes through your regulatory advisor before print. Supplier function descriptions do not transfer.
How to Position These in a US Line
For a US-facing line, position only the verified SKU: state the actual ingredients, format, and documented buyer checks without carrying over a seller’s traditional function language. Do not use the word “medicated” as a shortcut for composition or regulatory status. The cited listings demonstrate that ingredient disclosure can be requested; they do not prove product performance, market demand, permitted claims, or commercial success.
For a useful quotation, identify the exact format, dimensions, pack count, target price tier, intended market, intended use, proposed claims and any ingredient exclusions. We then request the actual supplier’s formula and records before matching a sample. If the buyer wants a lower price, any change in botanical inputs, proportions, construction, packaging, evidence package or service level must be explicit in a new specification version; the name “Taiyi” or “thunder-fire” cannot conceal the change.
Thunder-Fire Formats: Cones and Large Sticks
The cited thunder-fire listings show more than one physical form. Do not treat the name as a complete product definition:
- Large-format sticks. Source [6] is one seller-described thunder-fire stick listing with its own formula. Do not infer a standard diameter, construction, or composition from that trade name; request the actual SKU specification, complete formula, and hazard information.
- Cone formats. Cone products marketed with this name require their own specification, composition, hazard information, packaging, and target-market review. A name similarity is not evidence that a cone and a stick share a formula.
The name is a marketing input; the SKU is the product you must review. If a supplier cannot provide a complete composition and specification, record that evidence gap and do not transfer a different seller’s formula to the proposed SKU. Source [6] illustrates one thunder-fire listing with moxa, sulfur, frankincense, and other botanicals; it does not establish a standard formula. Because a seller-described formula can include sulfur and other botanicals, do not ignite it as a casual sourcing comparison: obtain the complete formula, SDS or equivalent hazard information where applicable, and a qualified decision on controlled test conditions first. Retail availability in the cited sources also does not establish US demand, price competitiveness, or margin.
Formula Change Control for an Approved SKU
Where a buyer approves a blended SKU, consider a written change-notification requirement covering composition, proportions, source materials, packaging, and process changes. The purpose is document control: a change can affect the approved ingredient list, classification review, label review, and sample record. A supplier’s agreement or refusal is itself a commercial fact to record; neither response proves product quality or compliance.

Public sources help frame terminology, specifications and buyer questions. They do not prove that every factory, formula or destination-market requirement is identical.

How this guide was prepared
Moxa Sourcing Editorial Team
The team translates supplier references, product samples and China-side sourcing workflows into practical English guidance for overseas buyers.
Moxa Sourcing Supply Review Team
The review team checks supplier attribution, commercial boundaries, product specifications and statements that require sample or market-specific verification.
Product availability, MOQ, price and production specifications are reconfirmed against the selected supplier reference. The buyer or importer leads the destination-market decision and retains applicable statutory importer duties; Moxa Sourcing supports the process by coordinating product and supplier evidence, specifications, documents, testing and label inputs, version control and agreed professional partners.
