How to put out moxa safely: extinguishing and fire safety
Why charcoal moxa does not go out on its own, the safe ways to extinguish moxa sticks and cones (extinguisher cap, sealed jar, sand, foil), why not to use water, and the fire-safety rules from manufacturer and clinic guides.
Short answer: put moxa out by cutting off its oxygen: use a moxa extinguisher, a screw-top glass jar or a bowl of dry sand. Do not use water [1][2]. Charcoal moxa does not go out by itself easily, so it must be extinguished deliberately [3].
Methods
| Method | How | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Moxa extinguisher | Metal cap or tube sized to the stick; push the lit end in | [2][1] |
| Glass jar | Put the lit end into a screw-top glass jar and close the lid firmly | [1] |
| Dry sand | Push the lit end into a glass or ceramic bowl of dry sand (not plastic) | [2][1] |
| Heavy foil | Fold several layers snugly around the lit end and stand the stick upright so the hot end touches nothing | [2] |
Not water. Clinic instructions explicitly say not to use water [1].
Check it is out
- Look for any red glow before storing the stick.
- If unsure, leave it in the extinguisher or jar until cool.
- Extinguished sticks can be relit later [1].
Why charcoal moxa is different
Smokeless sticks are designed to burn slowly and steadily. A supplier guide says good smokeless moxa won’t extinguish itself easily, so you will need an ashtray or extinguisher [3]. One US clinic reports burn rates of about 2.7 inches per hour [4]. A stick left on a surface can smoulder for a long time.
Fire-safety rules from manufacturers and clinics
- Never leave burning moxa unattended [5][6].
- Never set a lit stick down unless it is in a holder or extinguisher [2].
- Keep bedding, clothing and hair clear of boxes and holders [6].
- Use non-plastic containers for ash and extinguishing [2].
- Keep moxa products away from children; they are “not toys” [5].
- Never use moxa when you might fall asleep.
If something catches fire
Follow local emergency guidance: get people out, and call the fire service for anything you cannot put out immediately. For skin burns, see Moxa burns.

How do you put out a moxa stick?
Cut off its oxygen: push the lit end into a moxa extinguisher or a screw-top glass jar and close it, push it into a bowl of dry sand, or wrap it tightly in several layers of heavy foil and stand it upright. Check that no glow remains.
Can I put out moxa with water?
Clinic guides say not to use water. Use an extinguisher, a sealed jar or sand instead.
Can I reuse moxa after putting it out?
Yes. An extinguished stick can be relit for the next session.
