Moxibustion for fertility, IVF and PCOS: what the research says
A careful summary of systematic reviews and trials on moxibustion for polycystic ovary syndrome, ovulation, ovarian reserve and IVF endometrial receptivity — mostly combined with other treatments and low quality. No fertility claims.
Short answer: searches such as “moxa stick for fertility”, “moxa after embryo transfer” and الموكسا للحمل are common [1]. The research mostly studies moxibustion combined with other treatments, especially in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Reviews report some benefit but consistently warn that study quality is poor [2][3]. We found no reliable evidence that moxibustion alone improves the chance of pregnancy.
Important: this page reports research only. It does not recommend moxibustion to improve fertility. Talk to your fertility specialist before using any complementary therapy, and avoid self-treating the abdomen or lower back with moxa when you could be pregnant; see pregnancy safety.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
| Source | What was studied | Reported finding | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta-analysis, 2018 [2] | Oriental herbal medicine plus moxibustion | “Might be beneficial”, including alongside clomiphene, oral contraceptives or metformin | Poor methodological quality; interpret with caution |
| Meta-analysis, 2022 [3] | Acupuncture plus moxibustion as a complement to basic treatment | Better pregnancy, ovulation and miscarriage rates; some hormone and metabolic changes; good safety | Combination therapy; no effect on several hormones |
| Network meta-analysis, 2025 [4] | Acupuncture-related therapies in obese PCOS | Improved glucose and lipid measures (moderate certainty); moxibustion plus catgut embedding ranked best for blood glucose | Metabolic outcomes, not pregnancy |
Ovulation, ovarian reserve and IVF
- Anovulatory infertility. A Chinese randomized trial reported herb-partitioned moxibustion on the navel to be superior to clomiphene on clinical efficacy, with similar ovulation rates [5]. This is a single trial.
- Diminished ovarian reserve. A scoping review found the evidence quality “not ideal” and called for standardisation [6]. Another review mapped which points are used, mainly on the abdomen and lower back, which describes practice rather than proving effect [7].
- IVF endometrial receptivity. A 2025 review called acupuncture and moxibustion “promising adjunctive therapies” but said high-quality, standardized RCTs are needed [8].
- Laboratory work. Animal studies of drug-induced ovarian failure explore moxibustion combined with stem cells [9]. These results do not apply to people.
What Arabic-language searchers ask
Arabic searches often combine moxa with pregnancy and the womb (فوائد الموكسا للرحم) and with “women’s benefits” [1]. The same evidence applies: some combined-therapy studies in PCOS, and no proof that moxa alone helps conception.
Safety notes
- Abdominal moxa boxes and cones carry a burn risk [10].
- Once pregnancy is possible, follow the cautions in the pregnancy page. Case reports include fetal distress and premature birth [10].
- Check ingredients: some sticks contain herbs that their buyers had understood to be unsuitable in pregnancy [11].

FAQ: related questions
Does moxa help you get pregnant?
No reliable review shows that moxibustion on its own improves the chance of pregnancy. Some meta-analyses of moxibustion combined with acupuncture or herbal medicine in PCOS report better ovulation and pregnancy rates, but the authors say poor study quality means results must be interpreted with caution.
Can I use moxa during IVF?
Reviews describe acupuncture and moxibustion as promising adjunctive therapies for endometrial receptivity in IVF but say high-quality standardized trials are needed. Discuss any therapy with your fertility clinic first, because moxibustion on the abdomen may be unsuitable once pregnancy is possible.
