Smokeless moxa encyclopedia

What is moxa?

Moxa is processed mugwort (Artemisia) used for moxibustion. How it is made, its grades, forms (loose wool, sticks, cones, charcoal), the plant species, and how the word 'moxa' entered English.

Short answer: moxa is the processed mugwort used in moxibustion. Dried leaves are aged, ground and sieved into a soft fluff, called moxa floss or moxa wool, which is burned loose or formed into sticks and cones [1][2]. In China it is usually made from Artemisia argyi [3].

Where the word comes from

“Moxa” comes from the Japanese mogusa (from moe-gusa, “burning herb”). Hermann Buschoff spelled it “Moxa” in the first Western book on the subject (1674) [1]. In Chinese the plant is ài (艾); in Japanese, yomogi [1].

How moxa is made

Leaves are dried, aged, ground and sieved until only the soft leaf fibre remains. The finer the wool, the more evenly and gently it burns [2]. Products are graded by refinement ratio (for example 3:1 or 15:1) and storage years [4]. See How moxa floss is made.

Forms of moxa

Form Description Typical use
Loose moxa wool Soft floss in grades from coarse to ultra-fine Cones, okyu threads, moxa boxes [1][2]
Moxa stick (roll) Floss rolled in paper, cigar-shaped Suspended (indirect) moxibustion [2]
Moxa cone Compressed cone or cylinder On a base, needle or insulating slice [5]
Stick-on moxa Small cone on an adhesive, insulating base Self-adhesive indirect moxa [1][6]
Charcoal (smokeless) moxa Carbonized mugwort with binder, as sticks or cones Low-smoke indirect moxa [7][8]
Medicated moxa Moxa mixed with powdered herbs (e.g. Taiyi, Thunder-fire) Traditional formulas [9]

See Types of moxa products.

Moxa quality

Moxa quality is judged by leaf origin, refinement, impurities and age. ISO/TS 6818:2024 offers a test for the waste-particle concentration of moxa floss [10]. Production is concentrated in regions such as Nanyang and Qichun [11][12]. See Moxa quality grading.
