How moxa quality is judged

Researchers have applied the waste-particle method to moxa inside commercial moxibustion devices, showing that quality varies between products [6].
Signals for smokeless (charcoal) sticks
Carbonization hides the leaf’s texture, colour and smell, so raw-material quality is harder to judge [4]. A supplier guide suggests four burn tests [4]:
- Residue and crumbling: should not shed powder or crumble when tapped.
- Ash: whitish-grey and should not fall easily (black ash may mean low oxygen).
- Smoke: very little, faint and light-coloured.
- Burning: no sparks; should not self-extinguish once fully lit with enough air.
